Ban of R410A Aircon Equipment Supply in Singapore from Q4 2022

What the Ban of R410A Aircon Equipment Supply from Q4 2022 means?

If you had previously installed an R410A Aircon with the intention of future expansion (adding another indoor unit to your multi-split), you will not be able to do so in less than 2 yearstime.

If you would like to just replace a part of your existing R410A Aircon system be it one fan coil unit (indoor unit) or to just replace the condensing unit (outdoor unit), you will not be able to do so in less than 2 yearstime

So, if the above-mentioned scenarios are in your pipeline plan, we would recommend you to act fast and get the installation and/or replacement completed as soon as possible so as to lower the chance of not being able to do so when the R410A aircon model turns obsolete. Which may be earlier then Q4 2022, as suppliers will need to start phasing out their R410A product line in order to meet the regulatory requirements and we will not know for sure if the R410A aircon models will run out of stock ahead of the given deadline.

On the other hand, if you have just started looking around for a new aircon system, we would recommend looking into getting an Aircon system that uses R32 refrigerant so as to future proof yourself.

The future is green, and it comes with using the greener gas. Aside from doing your part to save the planet there are other benefits to upgrading to a R32 air conditioner system.

R32 has the highest energy efficiency and is able to achieve higher cooling capacity and the desired temperature faster. Save on your electricity bills and while reducing carbon footprint.

R32 enables your air-conditioners to use less refrigerant. With 20% less refrigerant charge as compared to R410A, R32 helps to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas.

R32 allows for a more compact & light weight design aircon outdoor unit. With lesser refrigerant charge, heat exchangers and other components have a smaller design.

R32 is more environmentally friendly. R32 has a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675 which is 1,413 GWP lower than that of R410A of 2088. The lower the GWP the better for the environment!  R32 is a single component refrigerant which makes reclamation easier while R410A is a blended refrigerant. Also, R32 does not deplete the ozone layer!

Ban on supply of RAC equipment that use high-GWP refrigerants from Q4 2022

Singapore, 4 March 2020 Minister for the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR), Mr Masagos Zulkifli, announced today in Parliament a package of mitigation measures to reduce Singapores greenhouse gases emissions arising from the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in the refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector.

HFCs are commonly used as refrigerants in RAC equipment. When emitted into the environment, HFCs are many times more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to global warming. The package of measures comprises four key initiatives, aimed at reducing HFC-related greenhouse gas emissions, to be implemented by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in phases from 2020 to 2023.

NEA will also be progressively phasing out RAC equipment that use high-GWP refrigerants. NEA will ban the supply of the following RAC equipment in Singapore from Q4 2022 as there are climate-friendly alternatives:
Household air-conditioners that use refrigerants with GWP of more than 750;
Household refrigerators that use refrigerants with GWP of more than 15; and
Water-cooled chillers that use refrigerants with GWP of more than 15.

Just like with the HCFCs freeze in 2013 whereby R22 aircon equipment can no longer be sold.

The time has come whereby we need to start moving away from HFC R410A air con equipment.

Future-proof yourself by opting for a R32 refrigerant type aircon system today!
