When shopping for a new air-conditioning system, it is important to take note of the aircon models for both indoor and outdoor units.

Most customers will know what their requirements are for the indoor unit capacity like 2.5kw (9,000 btu/hr), 3.5kw (12,000 btu/hr).

However, the outdoor units actually come with different capacities as well.

Without looking at any other product function, we have compiled a table of common aircon brands in Singapore based on their cooling capacity and annual energy cost.

To try and level the playing field, we have opted to select the aircon model based on NEA rating 5 ticksenergy efficient, multi-split type aircon, and by selecting the smallest cooling capacity within the individual brand offerings.

Data* Table Summary

Coefficient of Performance (COP) means the ratio of the total cooling capacity expressed in Watts to the total effective input power expressed in Watts.
2. Full load COP means the COP at 100% load, while Part load COP (applicable for inverter air-cons only) means the COP at 50% load.
3. Weighted COP = 0.6 x Part Load COP + 0.4 x Full load COP. Weighted COP is used to calculate the annual energy consumption and annual energy cost for inverter air-conditioners.
4. Annual energy consumption and annual energy cost include the standby energy consumption.
5. The actual annual energy consumption depends on factors such as room temperature, thermostat setting, frequency of maintenance etc.
6. The estimated annual energy cost may vary from the actual annual energy cost.
7. kW is approximately 3412 BTU/hr.
8. R32 is a more climate-friendly refrigerant as it has a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP of 675), compared to R410A (GWP of 2088).

9. Energy Calculation is based on 8 numbers of hours used per day with electricity tariff of 0.27$/kWh

Choosing the Aircon for Your Requirements

From the table, we can see that aircon utilising R32 refrigerant is more efficient than R410A refrigerant.

And that lower cooling capacity will translate to lower energy cost.

However, it is important to select the outdoor units that are suitable for your requirement as well.

Select the Air Conditioner that suits your needs, preferences and of course appoint a good and reputable company to do the installation!
